Ivo Watts-Russell (founder of the British record label 4AD) and John Fryer began This Mortal Coil in the mid-1980's going on to release three full-length albums featuring a large rotating cast of artists, many who were signed to, or otherwise associated with, 4AD. Over the course of the three albums, members of the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Wire, The Pixies, Siouxsie & The Banshees and many others all collaborated to create unique interpretations of many of Watts-Russell's favorite songs. About half of the songs released were cover songs, often of 1960s and 1970s psychedelic and folk acts including Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Big Star, Roy Harper and many more.
Due to the complex nature of the project and the many collaborators, no live performances ever took place. On January 7th, 2010, a group of musicians including a string quartet, a trio of vocalists and some of the Bay Area's best visual artists will finally bring the music of This Mortal Coil to the stage.
THE PERFORMERS:
Ryan Coseboom - arrangements/guitars/keyboards/percussion
Producer and mult-instrumentalist Ryan Coseboom (Halou, Stripmall Architecture) has assembled a string quartet and and a trio of the Bay Area's most powerful female vocalists to bring the material to life. Ryan has been involved in several recent high-profile projects including:
» Remixes for Frank Sinatra, Low, and Rod Stewart (a tongue-in-cheek remix of 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' that went to #1 on Billboard's dance chart) and others. Ryan also contributed to DJ Shadow's infamous remix of Radiohead's 'The Gloaming'.
» Scoring for film and television including CSI, ESPN, MTV and two award-winning independent feature films, 'This Girl's Life' and 'Quality Of Life'.
» His own bands (Halou and Stripmall Architecture) have collaborated with artists including Robin Guthrie, Zoe Keating and John Cale and have been featured on renowned radio stations KCRW and KEXP.
victoria lloyd - Vocals
Victoria is the vocalist for Sacramento's Claire Voyant. Claire Voyant has just released their fourth album, Lustre, on Metropolis Records.
"Lustre brings again the unique voice of Victoria Lloyd which sounds sometimes fragile, sometimes demanding...intelligently weaving arcs of melody." - ZILLO
rebecca coseboom - vocals
Rebecca Coseboom is the vocalist for Stripmall Architecture and was a longtime member of Bay Area favorites Halou. Some recent press about Rebecca:
“Rebecca Coseboom - a female front woman with an incredible voice - proves she has enough swagger and sway to keep things interesting without ever being overstated” - CMJ
“Earthy and airy, organic and dreamy, songs that surround you then suddenly take wing and fly away. Rebecca sings with a rarefied, alluring intimacy.” - MSNBC
erica mulkey (unwoman)
Unwoman is a San Francisco-based cellist/singer/composer/producer. She performs solo voice-cello (with or without laptop accompaniment) often in the Bay Area, plays cello with Stripmall Architecture, Jill Tracy, Vernian Process and other acts, and has also toured the US with Voltaire (April 2009) and Rasputina (June 2006).
